In order to build a little excitement about my next book series, Star Song, I'm going to post snippets of this work-in-progress over the next several months. My goal is to introduce you to some of the main heroes and villains, and to give you a little flavor of what to expect.

Along with the excerpts, I'm going to include sketches of the characters by my new artist, Michael Lynch. He's doing a fantastic job, and I can't wait to share the rest of my characters.

So, here's the first one: the Solemsiel.

With new purpose, Brin’tac exited the room and headed toward the foyer. He reached the top of the stairs that led down to the entrance and took a moment to study the Solemsiel couple that awaited him.

The pair stood studying the flowing rock sculpture that rested on a short pedestal in the center of the expansive foyer. Although the work of art was over six feet in height, it still only reached up to the chin of the eight foot tall aliens.

Their exquisitely crafted clothing was typical of Solemsiel culture. The female wore a simple, but beautifully woven dress that stretched to just above her ankles. Her companion wore a white shirt that had a crisscross pattern over his chest, a simple pair of black pants with gold embroidery around the cuffs, and an elegant grey overcoat that came to the backs of his knees. His blue skin had swirls of green throughout, which was most prominent on his neck and the backs of his four hands. white short dresses

Although his right two hands were empty and hung at his side, his left pair held a type of staff that was just a foot shorter than him. Brin’tac, though not proficient in musyk, recognized it as a windstaff - a musykal instrument used by some maestros. It was comprised of numerous long, but thin wooden tubes rolled into a cylindrical shape. Complex mechanisms made up of metallic keys covered dozens of holes spaced throughout the staff.

Mentally preparing himself for what lay ahead, Brin’tac took one last deep breath and descended the stairs toward his guests. “Master Arrangers, thank you for coming,” he said as he reached the last few steps.

At his greeting, the two Arrangers turned away from the sculpture and offered polite bows to their host. “It is a pleasure to meet you,” the Solemsiel male said as he crossed his upper two arms in front of him and touched the backs of his fists together in the traditional Lah’grex greeting, all the while adjusting his bottom left hand’s hold on the windstaff. “My name is Roakin Balikye, and this is my bride, Saryn.”

Brin’tac mirrored the greeting and bow before responding. “And I am Brin’tac eth Galithar. Thank you for coming so quickly.”
